The Downtown Farmers Market kicked off the 2007 season the evening of Monday June 11, beginning at 5 p.m.
Above, 10-year-old Austin Newman helps his dad David pack up goodies purchased by a devoted customer at The Downtown Farmer's Market.
Newman, one of several vendors who set up along the roadway beside United Banks Downtown Branch, has been coming to the market since it's beginning.
&#8220I started helping Dad out with this first,” said Newman, who has been selling their homegrown produce and Christmas trees for 15 years. &#8220When the market started down here, Dad would come up on his own and after some time I decided to join him. Now my son comes with me. It's definitely a family affair.”
Newman's bounty of garden treats left nothing to the imagination. He says the garden, which is close to four acres, is doing as well as expected and last Friday's rainfall was a welcome sight.
&#8220Today we have Silver Princess corn, cucumbers, squash and some fresh fruit. As the season progresses and if the rain continues we will have just about anything anyone could ask for.”
Don't forget, the Downtown Farmers Market is available to the public every Wednesday morning from 8 a.m. until noon and Monday evenings beginning at 5 p.m. now until the first week of October. Vendors will be set up behind the downtown branch of United Bank.
