Memorial Day 2015 at Andersonville GA - MikeNewmanPhotos

Andersonville, Ga in Southeast Georgia was chosen as a site to house Sumter Prison.  It was designed to hold 10,000 prisoners on 16 Acres because of it's water.  As it happened 25,000 union soldiers were imprisoned at Andersonville at the peak of it's existence and the land was expanded to 26 acres for the prisoners inside the stockade.  The small stream proved not be enough of a water source and men died because of the lack of water.  During a storm lightning struck the ground and water flowed.  The spring gave enough water to revive the men and the spring was named Providence Spring.  The spring is still running to this day.
